The Kentucky Family Caregiver Program is a state funded program that provides help to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

To be eligible for the Kentucky Family Caregiver Program, a grandparent shall:

  • Be a Kentucky resident
  • Be the primary caregiver for a grandchild
  • Be related to the grandchild, who is no more than 18 years of age, by blood, marriage, or adoption
  • Reside with the grandchild and not with the either parent in the same home, although the home can be owned by the parent
  • Not receive a monthly payment for Kinship Care
  • Not have household income that exceeds 150% of the federal poverty level

A grandparent who has adopted a grandchild shall be eligible for the Kentucky Family Caregiver Program if the grandparent is not eligible for other state or federal adoption subsidies, and for a period not to exceed one (1) calendar year from final order of adoption

Services Provided

  • Information and assistance
  • Support groups and training opportunities
  • Supplemental services to include a voucher to purchase needed items such as  clothing, educational supplies, furniture, personal care items, required legal services, and medical and dental services in amounts up to $500 per grandchild.
  • Supplemental services cannot be used for medical services if the child has K-Chip.
  • Supplemental services for required legal services shall be related to the grandchild’s safety and stability and does not include representation against any criminal charges.
  • Respite Care Services:  provide grandparents with a break by sending their grandchild to a summer camp, basketball camp, or cheerleading camp for example.

If you would like to apply for the Kentucky Family Caregiver Program please print off and complete the following forms: KFCP Application, Informed Consent, DAIL Voter Registration, Responsibilities of Grandparent forms.

Complete all sections of the application and sign where indicated. Attach a copy of income verification for the entire household including income received by grandchildren. Examples of verification include:

pay stub from employment,
federal tax form,
social security award letter,
bank statement, etc.

If you have more than one grandchild that you are requesting assistance for, please complete page 2 of the application for each child. First time applicants are required to send a copy of custody paperwork if applicable.

Program eligibility will be based on a first come first serve basis with grandparents who have not received services in the past as first priority. Once all funding has been allocated, additional applicants will be placed on a waiting list for services. Incomplete applications or those without proof of income will be determined ineligible for services. A letter will be mailed stating ineligibility and a new application can be requested at this time. Please allow a minimum of 30 days for KFCP staff to process and approve applications.
